Time for Trivia...
Jun. 26th, 2004 09:58 pmToday at the library, someone called with a "this day in history" kind of question. The first thing that popped into my head was "Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee"! I'm not making that up. I really do live in the wrong century.
In honor of this occasion, I have fished out a story to read: "A Jubilee Present" by E.W. Hornung -- one of the Raffles ("the amateur cracksman") stories. E.W. Hornung was the brother-in-law of Arthur Conan Doyle, and wrote a number of short stories about a gentleman cricket player and thief. In this story Raffles steals a gold cup from the British Museum and then sends it to the Queen as a present for the Diamond Jubilee.
A nice description of the different Jubilees: http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page927.asp.
My partner pointed out that we could also watch "The Great Mouse Detective" (a mouse version of Sherlock Holmes, based on a lovely series of children's books by Eve Titus), as it is also set at the time of the Jubilee.
Enough trivia for one post...
