rosemary_greenI was starting in to re-read Busman's Honeymoon (one of the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries by Dorothy Sayers), and found a quote I just love. Peter's mother is writing in her diary about a visit from Harriet Vane (Peter's fiancee):
"Talked Peter till I could almost hear him saying, 'Mother dear, you are having an orgy' (or is it orgie?)"
That is just how I feel at the moment; I'm in another Dorothy Sayers phase. I've been re-reading (trying to read them in order and mostly succeeding), and also watching some of the BBC dramatizations. They are quite enjoyable, although it's better not to have just read the book, as there are a certain number of plot changes. So far I have seen Clouds of Witness, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, and part of The Nine Tailors. Watching Clouds of Witness, even more than reading it, made me think of The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Also I wish to report success in identifying at least one of the zillions of quotes in her books. In Have His Carcase (chapter 13), Lord Peter says "Like Alan Breck, I'm a bonny fighter," which comes from one of my favorite books of all time, Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. The original is as follows:
(from Chapter 10, The Siege of the Round-House):
"The round-house was like a shambles; three were dead inside, another lay in his death agony across the threshold; and there were Alan and I victorious and unhurt.
He came up to me with open arms. 'Come to my arms!' he cried, and embraced and kissed me hard upon both cheek. 'David,' said he, 'I love you like a brother. And O, man,' he cried in a kind of ecstasy, 'am I no a bonny fighter?'"
